작곡가 정진욱
작곡가 정진욱은 시각예술, 문학, 건축 등 다양한 예술 분야에서 출발한 아이디어에 음악적 생명력을 부여하는 과정에 깊은 관심을 두고 있다. 그는 다른 예술 영역의 개념을 단순히 음악으로 ‘번역’하는 데 머무르지 않고, 이를 비판적으로 성찰하며 새로운 질문과 시각을 제시할 수 있는 음악적 언어를 탐구한다. 그의 작품에서는 오늘날 세대의 문화 연구와 맞닿아 있는 탈식민주의와 신식민주의적 문제들이 중요한 주제로 다루어진다. 특히 그의 주요 창작 프로젝트 가운데 하나는 프랑스 바로크와 현대 한국 K-pop 사이의 다양한 미학적 관계와 시대적 맥락을 사회적으로 분석함으로써, 동시대 사회에 나타나는 성별 편견과 소셜 미디어 문화에 대한 메시지를 환기하는 데 있다. 최근 작품인 K-ourante 사이클과 La folie des Lotophages는 이러한 문제의식을 더욱 확장하며, 역사적 형식과 동시대 글로벌 문화의 미학을 새롭게 연결하는 음악적·연극적 재구성을 시도하고 있다.
서울에서 태어난 정진욱은 여섯 살 때 피아노와 바이올린을 배우기 시작했으며, 어린 시절 즉흥 연주를 통해 자연스럽게 작곡의 길로 들어섰다. 2006년 한국예술종합학교 예비학교 과정에 입학하여 작곡과 피아노를 공부하였으며, 이후 독일 브레멘 국립예술대학교(Hochschule für Künste Bremen)에서 Jörg Birkenkötter를 사사하며 작곡 학사 과정을 마쳤다. 이후 오스트리아 그라츠 국립음악대학(Kunstuniversität Graz)에서 Beat Furrer와 Franck Bedrossian의 지도 아래 석사 과정을 밟았으며, 프랑스 파리 국립고등음악원(Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris, CNSMDP)에서 Gérard Pesson을 사사하였다. 이어 독일 쾰른 국립음대에서 Brigitta Muntendorf의 지도 아래 최고연주자과정(Konzertexamen)을 마쳤다. 현재 그는 프랑스 파리와 벨기에 브뤼셀을 기반으로 활동하고 있다. 그는 작곡가로서 Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, SWR Symphonieorchester, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Klangforum Wien, ensemble recherche, Ensemble intercontemporain, Ictus, Multilatérale, Schallfeld, Ensemble Musikfabrik 등 세계적인 오케스트라와 앙상블과 협업해 왔다.
그의 음악은 Festival de Royaumont, Archipel Genève, musikprotokoll, impuls Festival, Daegu International Contemporary Music Festival, IlSUONO Contemporary Music Week, Newmusic Week Rome, Time of Music, Festival ZeitGenuss, ZKM Karlsruhe 등 다양한 국제 음악제에서 연주되었다. 또한 그의 작품은 포르투갈에서 열린 ISCM World New Music Days에서 Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra에 의해 연주되었다. 그는 IRCAM이 주최하는 Festival ManiFeste에 초청되어 오케스트라 작품 Unerasing을 발표하였으며, 이 작품은 Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France에 의해 초연되었다. 이 밖에도 Chaya Czernowin과 Simon Steen-Andersen이 이끄는 프로젝트 Sound of Wander에 초청되어 밀라노에서 작품을 발표하였고, Salvatore Sciarrino가 주최하는 이탈리아 시에나의 Chigiana Festival에도 초청되어 Quartetto Prometeo와 Matteo Cesari에 의해 그의 작품이 초연되었다. 정진욱은 독일 국가장학재단의 Deutschlandstipendium, Oscar and Vera Ritter Foundation, DAAD 등 여러 기관의 장학금과 지원을 받았으며, Karlsruhe International Composition Competition과 Florence Composition Competition에서 1위를, 폴란드 Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition과 이탈리아 Gesualdo International Composition Competition에서 각각 2위를 수상하였다. 또한 2025년에는 프랑스의 Fondation Banque Populaire의 수상자로 선정되었다. 그는 Philharmonie de Paris, Bozar, Radio France, Brucknerhaus Linz, Stockholm Chamber Brass 등 여러 기관으로부터 작품을 위촉받았으며, 벨기에 Ensemble Fractales의 위촉 작품은 리에주 La Boverie에서 초연되었다. 그는 또한 파리 Cité internationale des arts의 상주 작곡가로 활동했으며, Composició Musical Rodamúsic와 Artistic Residency NODUS 프로그램의 레지던시 작곡가로 참여하였다. 최근 프로젝트로는 Bozar의 위촉으로 Ictus를 위해 작곡된 작품과 네덜란드 Gaudeamus Festival을 위해 작곡된 작품이 있으며, 이 작품은 HIIIT – Slagwerk Den Haag에 의해 초연되었다. 이처럼 정진욱의 음악은 다양한 연주와 프로젝트를 통해 유럽을 넘어 세계 음악계에서 주목받고 있다.
